May 2012 - I shall go into hiding again and work on writing projects close to my heart (including one co-edited book with David Herold, one monograph, and obtaining funding for an exciting new project).
April 2012 - The Modes of Activism and Engagement in the Chinese Public Sphere conference took place on 26-27 April 2012. As expected, it was as far from your typical uninspired and boring conference as you can possibly imagine. I have learned tons and met some interesting people. Main organizer Jonathan Benney and I are working on channeling selected papers into a journal special issue or edited book. Details upon request.
February 2012 - I just submitted a funding application for an exciting conference with the tentative title Global Insurgencies -- Remaking the Public City in Asia. We hope to start discussion about the ways in which corporatization and insurgencies invoke the remaking of the public city. The tentative timeline is 29-30 November 2012. Details upon request.
January 2012 - I am co-organizing a conference on Modes of Activism and Engagement in the Chinese Public Sphere, to be held here at ARI on 26-27 April 2012. More information can be found here.
November 2011 - An essay that outlines my research interests and biographical sketch in some more detail has been printed in the ARI Newsletter.
October 2011 - The Asia's Civil Spheres workshop took place on 29-30 September 2011. The participants have made the workshop come alive beyond expectations!
April 2011 - We have obtained funding to run the workshop Asia's Civil Spheres: New Media, Urban Public Space, Social Movements. Please refer to the ARI Websitefor further information. Do contact me with any questions!
March 2011 - The seriously further deteriorating human rights situation in China compels me to put on hold my research on Beijing-based (environmental) activisms so as to not endanger my research participants. I have hence broadened the range of political/cultural activities I will be looking at in my research (going beyond the former, self-imposed focus on environmental issues).
